The Sibelius “Finlandia” is a beloved masterpiece, with cascades of winds and brass and the hymn to independence that made the composer a national hero.

From Floyd’s only traffic light, go 0.2 mi on S Locust St; turn L on Baker St and go about a half mile to the high school straight ahead. Miriam Liske-
Doorandish, Cello
Miriam Liske-Doorandish is an 18-year old cellist and artist from Eggleston, VA. At the age of two she requested her first cello, and began her musical studies with her mother, Lisa Liske-Doorandish. She has since received instruction from Jonathan Kramer (NCSU), Hans Jensen (Northwestern University) and Bartholomew LaFollette (The Yehudi Menuhin School) while continuing to collaborate with and learn from her mother. To facilitate lessons with her current teacher and mentor Mr. LaFollette (who lives in London), Miriam has spent the past year dividing her time between the U.S. and Europe. She plans to continue her cellistic studies in London at the Royal College of Music in the fall, undertaking a joint-study with Thomas Carroll and Bartholomew LaFollette.
As a performer Miriam has broad experience, ranging from solo recitals and performances with orchestra to concerts with members of the Carmina Quartet and collaborations with celtic, folk and jazz musicians. Miriam enjoys many genres of music, and often improvises in diverse styles.
A devoted chamber musician, Miriam has received merit scholarships to summer festivals such as the North Carolina School of the Arts Summer Program, The National Music Festival, Soundfest Chamber Music Festival, and Bowdoin International Music Festival. She has also attended Alasdair Beatson’s chamber music festival Musique à Marsac in southwest France. Miriam has collaborated with members of the Carmina, Doric, Ying, Chiaroscuro and Colorado Quartets, and when in the States frequently performs with the Blue Ridge Cello Ensemble and the Junonia Cello Quartet.
Miriam has had success at several competitions including the Arts Academy of North Carolina’s annual Violin and Cello Competition, the Tennessee Cello Workshop Competition, the Music Teacher’s National Association Competition, and the Glenn Miller Scholarship Competition in Iowa. She has also appeared on NPR’s From The Top radio program with pianist Christopher O’Reilly and cellist Matt Haimovitz.
Through events such as the Lazslo Varga Celebration, the Elizabeth Cowling celebration, and the Tennessee Cello Workshop, Miriam has participated in masterclasses with the likes of Steven Doane, Bonnie Hampton, Hans Jensen, Colin Carr, David Finckel, Zuill Bailey, Thomas Grossenbacher, and Amy Barston.
In addition to her musical pursuits, Miriam is a visual artist and maintains a keen interest in sociological and environmental issues.
Marisa Youngs,
Trumpet
Marisa Youngs is a recent graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) with a degree in Music Education. At IUP, Marisa was principal trumpet of the Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band, co-principal of the Symphony Orchestra, and a member of the Opera Pit Orchestra and Trumpet Ensemble. She was chosen to be a member of the IUP Merit Brass Quintet, “Legacy Brass,” and created a student-led quintet known as “Tenebrae Brass.” Last summer, Tenebrae Brass traveled to Germany as the resident student quintet at the Frankenwald Brass Festival. Outside of IUP, Marisa was the principal trumpet of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra, which traveled throughout Italy to perform in various cities as part of the Florence International Youth Festival. She is a past-winner of the IUP Concerto Competition and was also awarded two International Trumpet Guild conference scholarships. In the Fall, Marisa will begin her Master’s Degree in Trumpet Performance at Boston University.
Maria Ortiz-Laboy,
Clarinet
Maria Ortiz-Laboy is currently pursuing her Master of Music degree in clarinet performance from the University of Akron, where she studies with Dr. Kristina Belisle Jones and serves as a Graduate Assistant. Originally from Puerto Rico, she began her studies in music education at the Puerto Rico Conservatory, but eventually switched to music performance, which is her true passion. At the Conservatory, Maria studied with Dr. Oskar Espina-Ruíz, Dr. Dawn Lindblade, and Kathleen Jones. Maria has played principal clarinet in orchestras and bands both in Puerto Rico and the United States. In Spring 2012, she was awarded the James Tannenbaum Memorial Scholarship, placing first in the competition for an exceptional performance of the W.A. Mozart Clarinet Concerto. After graduating from Akron, Maria plans to pursue a DMA in Clarinet Performance.
